Is there a family income requirement?

HBCSF does not have an income requirement. Scholarship recipients are selected from a large pool of applicants that meet scholastic requirements and are also in need of financial aid to meet tuition costs or purchase of books.

What is the definition of Hispanic?

There are twenty Spanish-speaking countries in the world, plus the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Thus, any student with at least one parent or grandparent who was born in any of these countries would qualify. These countries include Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela, Equatorial Guinea and as mentioned above, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

What type of community service is required?

Community service is not a requirement of scholarship applicants. Community service is a requirement of scholarship recipients.

Community service by a scholarship recipient can be substantiated by submitting an original letter addressed to the HBCSF from a school, church, hospital or other non-profit organization (food bank, homeless shelter, American Red Cross, etc.) of his/her choice stating the community service completed. The letter should also include the contact information of the person providing the letter in the event we need to contact the organization

I, or my parents, have not finalized or filed last year's income taxes by the scholarship deadline date. What do I do?

Submit last year's W-2's and / or 1099's provided by employers, along with a statement that last year's income tax return has not been completed. In addition, submit the entire income tax return for the previous year.

What if I study abroad one semester? Will the scholarship still be paid?

As long as the tuition is paid through the U.S. based school and not the school abroad, you would still be able to exercise your scholarship.

I don't believe that I will be able to submit all the requirements together in one package at the same time. Can the requirements be sent individually?

Yes, you may submit the requirements individually. IE: The official school transcript or the letter of recommendation may be sent directly from the respective provider. However, all requirements must be postmarked by the deadline indicated on the scholarship application.
